What this tool does
Computes VAT and the gross amount from a net amount and a rate. You enter the rate; the tool does not decide what is taxable or exempt.
How to use it
- Enter the net amount.
- Enter the VAT rate as a percentage.
- Run it to get the tax and the gross total.
Worked example
A net amount of 100 at 10% gives 10 in VAT and a gross total of 110.

- How do I extract the net amount from a gross figure?
- Divide the gross by 1.1 for the net at 10%; the remainder is VAT. For other rates divide by (1 + rate/100). 110 ÷ 1.1 is 100.
- How do I handle exempt supplies?
- Entering a rate of 0 gives zero tax. Note that exemption and zero-rating are reported differently, so check your tax rules.
What this tool does not cover
Exemption and zero-rating decisions, input tax credits, and filing forms are out of scope. Confirm the applicable rate with your local rules.
