What this tool does

Computes the tax amount and the tax-inclusive total from a pre-tax amount and a rate. You supply the rate; the tool does not determine which jurisdiction applies.

How to use it

  1. Enter the pre-tax amount.
  2. Enter the applicable rate as a percentage.
  3. Run it to get the tax amount and the total including tax.

Worked example

100 before tax at 10% gives 10 in tax and a total of 110.

Calculation method

Taxnet*rate/100
Tax-inclusive totalnet*(1+rate/100)

Frequently asked questions

How do I back the tax out of a tax-inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive amount by (1 + rate/100) to get the pre-tax amount; the difference is the tax. From 110 at 10%, that is 100 and 10.
What if several rates stack?
Where state, city, and county rates combine, work out the combined rate and enter it once. This tool applies a single rate.

What this tool does not cover

Exemptions, deductions, and taxability determinations are out of scope. Confirm the applicable rate and whether tax applies with your local rules.
