What this tool does
Adds purchases to opening inventory and subtracts cost of goods sold to get closing inventory. This is the basic identity used to check book inventory before a count, or to back out COGS.
How to use it
- Enter opening inventory — the same figure as last period’s closing balance.
- Enter purchases for the period.
- Enter cost of goods sold for the period.
- Run it to get closing inventory.
Worked example
Opening 10,000, purchases 5,000, and COGS 7,000 give closing inventory of 10,000 + 5,000 − 7,000 = 8,000.

opening+purchases-cogsFrequently asked questions
- The result is negative.
- That means COGS exceeds opening plus purchases, so one input is wrong or the periods do not line up. Check that all three cover the same window.
- It disagrees with my physical count — what next?
- Differences usually come from damage, loss, unrecorded returns, or costing errors. This tool computes the book figure only; it does not explain the gap.
What this tool does not cover
COGS and closing inventory depend on the costing method (FIFO, LIFO, weighted average). This tool only combines amounts you have already determined.
