Compress Images

Run Compress Images using the supplied input and options.

Animated input produces still first frame. Preserve transparency for PNG/WebP; JPEG requires background. Browser codec support determines accepted formats.

What this tool does

Re-encodes an image to reduce file size. You choose the quality value and output format, and the result reports byte counts and dimensions before and after.

How to use it

  1. Choose the image file.
  2. Pick an output format: JPEG or WebP for photos, PNG when you need transparency.
  3. Set quality between 0 and 1. Start at the 0.8 default and lower it while comparing visually.
  4. Run it and read the reported byte counts to see the actual reduction.

Worked example

A 1600×1200 PNG converted to JPEG at quality 0.8 returns a JPEG at the same dimensions, with both byte counts shown in the result.

Frequently asked questions

I lowered quality but the size barely changed.
With PNG output the quality value has almost no effect, because PNG is lossless. For photos, switch the format to JPEG or WebP.
My transparent background turned white.
JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.

What this tool does not cover

Files are processed in your browser. Animated GIFs come out as still images. A smaller file is not guaranteed, so check the reported byte counts.
