What this tool does
Computes the volume and weight of road base material: volume times bulk density, plus a waste allowance.
How to use it
- Enter length and width in metres.
- Enter the base layer depth in metres.
- Enter bulk density from your supplier’s data.
- Enter the waste allowance and run it.
Worked example
10 m × 5 m × 0.1 m gives 5 m³; at 1,600 kg/m³ with 10% waste that is 8,800 kg.
Calculation method
Base volume
length*width*depthOrder mass
length*width*depth*density*(1+waste/100)Frequently asked questions
- Is the depth before or after compaction?
- The calculation uses the depth you enter as a space volume. To hit a compacted target you must lay it thicker loose, so raise the waste allowance.
- What about multiple layers?
- Depths and materials differ per layer, so compute each separately and add them.
What this tool does not cover
It assumes a rectangular area and ignores compaction factors, drainage slopes, and subgrade condition. The default density is illustrative.
