What this tool does
Computes the volume and weight of gravel for a rectangular area: volume times bulk density, plus a waste allowance for the order weight.
How to use it
- Enter length and width in metres.
- Enter the layer depth in metres.
- Enter the bulk density, using your supplier’s figure.
- Enter the waste allowance and run it.
Worked example
10 m × 5 m × 0.1 m gives 5 m³; at 1,600 kg/m³ with 10% waste that is 8,800 kg.
Calculation method
Base volume
length*width*depthOrder mass
length*width*depth*density*(1+waste/100)Frequently asked questions
- Can I keep the 1,600 default density?
- It is illustrative. Actual bulk density varies with stone type, gradation, and moisture. Replace it with your supplier’s figure for the order to be right.
- How do I order in tonnes?
- Divide the kilogram result by 1,000 — 8,800 kg is 8.8 tonnes.
What this tool does not cover
It assumes a rectangular area. Settlement after compaction, drainage slopes, and irregular shapes are not reflected. The default density is not a material specification.
