Balancing image quality and file size
JPEG or WebP often suit photographs. PNG may suit text, line art and images requiring transparency. Converting a transparent image to JPEG requires filling the transparent area.
A quality slider does not reduce PNG size in the same way. Choose the actual display dimensions first and remove unnecessary pixels. Enlarging an image can increase its size without recovering detail.
Inspect text edges, faces and smooth color gradients at 100% zoom. Re-encoding does not guarantee a smaller file, so compare the input and output byte counts.
